Why Choose Us

We offer an experiential, person-centred, and integrated approach to talking therapy.  Using various tools we are able to help a person to recognise, acknowledge and deal with repressed or supressed emotional blocks, and to help clients to understand and connect with their Inner Child. We believe that the mind, body and spirit are of equal importance and that our emotional wellbeing is the key to a contented, fulfilling life.

Our philosophy is that when a child’s needs have not been met the emotional pain felt in childhood continues to influence an individuals adult behaviour and emotion wellbeing. ETC works with the wounded inner child in facilitating the re-connection to the hurting child and reparenting to heal past trauma’s and to promote growth and healthy relationships.

Our training is developed and delivered by experienced practising Emotional Therapeutic Counsellors.

Our Level 3 and Level 4 courses are approved by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society

Who We Are

Academy for Emotional Therapeutic Counselling

The Concept of ETC

The concept of Emotional Therapy was devised over 20 years ago by Therapist Alice Crichton and Psychologist Sheila Ward who, as a result of her training and client work, felt there was a more effective approach to those experiencing emotional difficulty. Realising that many difficulties people experienced centred around feelings rather than the manifestation of conscious/unconscious activities, she worked on developing an approach that moved away from the source of difficulties as centred in the mind; and treating them from the point of view of having an emotional base. Incorporating aspects of the work of Therapists such as Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, Gerard Egan, Bugenthal and more recently, John Bradshaw and Penny Parks; the Founders developed an integrative counselling modality which became established as the Foundation for Emotional Therapeutic Counselling which is a registered charity and membership association. The training is provided by Academy of Emotional Therapeutic Counselling which is a registered UK learning provider, a registered training provider under the National Counselling and Psychotherapy  Society and the Professional Standards Authority.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide the highest level of training in Emotional Therapeutic Counselling to all students. By offering high quality counselling courses that empower and prepare our students to go on to become Emotional Therapeutic Counsellors; we are giving them the tools to be able to help individuals to live their lives to their fullest potential.

Our training is externally verified: “Currently, the methods of assessment at all three levels are comprehensive and robust. There is a clear pathway to development from the Foundation Level to Advanced Diploma. The assessment process at each level ensures that Learners and Trainees are engaging in a programme of learning that is fit for purpose, and results in graduating trainees who are fit to practice. In addition, the programme of learning meets the demands of Ofqual and reflects Level Descriptors for each of the three levels. The assessment processes are worthy of the accreditation status.

“AETC is retained as ‘Outstanding’, as there has been a consolidation of standards identified at the previous External Examiner/Verifier visits – despite the restrictions and reasonable adjustments afforded to the students’ during the lockdown period”. (Dr Phillip Rees, External Verifier, March 2021)

The Concept of ETC

The concept of Emotional Therapy was devised over 30 years ago by Therapist Alice Crichton and Psychologist Sheila Ward who, as a result of her training and client work, felt there was a more effective approach to those experiencing emotional difficulty. A retired Chief Superintendent with the Police, Sheila was concerned about the way in which people were treated after experiencing traumatic situations and felt there must be a better way to treat them. Realising that many difficulties people experienced centred around feelings rather than the manifestation of conscious/unconscious activities, she worked on developing an approach that moved away from the source of difficulties as centred in the mind; and treating them from the point of view of having an emotional base. Incorporating aspects of the work of Therapists such as Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, Gerard Egan, Bugental and more recently, John Bradshaw and Penny Parks; the Founders developed an integrative counselling modality which became established as the Foundation for Emotional Therapeutic Counselling which is a registered charity and membership association. The training is provided by Academy of Emotional Therapeutic Counselling which is a registered UK learning provider.

I have just completed the Foundation Course and want to say how much of a profound and transformational affect it has had on me.   During the course I began to feel positive shifts within myself to places I’ve never felt or I’ve never been aware existed. I have had several revelations with the tools, exercises, the journaling, and even in writing the assignment.   The course is very well planned with a curriculum that is experiential based. The tutors are excellent, encouraging and hugely supportive both academically and personally. The group I was with were phenomenal, such supportive friends. Thank you for a well-run, life changing and life affirming course.

For me, the Foundation in Emotional Therapeutic Counselling course provided a safe, supportive learning environment to see whether counselling could be something that felt like a good fit and would be something I enjoyed doing. A growth learning environment was fostered from the start, in which authenticity was valued and modelled, students were nurtured and empowered and there was empathy and curiosity for the students’ process. Tutors were welcoming and approachable; timings were well-paced and not rushed; when students shared their observations and experiences, people were curious and listened. The energy in the room was good! I am so glad I signed up for this course which gave me the confidence to progress to the level 4 Diploma.

“I had been looking for a course that will give me a Diploma and Advanced Diploma and I came across the AETC website. It sounded perfect for me and I signed up without hesitation. The Foundation course has been a real eye opener for me and we have been through all kinds of personal situations and made some sense of them. The techniques are brilliant, and the trainers were really supportive throughout. I knew that this was the right course for me.
